Relocation

Services

Relocation has been found to be beneficial for former offenders trying to re-enter back into society and live a crime-free life. What relocation means is moving and living away from the area that the offender was located in when arrested. Relocation can be to another city or another state. The main idea and goal is that when an offender re-enters society in a different environment than they were before, it is easier to get a fresh start to a crime-free lifestyle since the same criminal influences are no longer around. Studies have shown this to be true.

Dr. David Kirk

Dr. David Kirk is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Kirk conducted a research study on how Hurricane Katrina affected ex-prisoners originally from New Orleans and their likelihood of returning to prison. Kirk found potential strategies for fostering residential change among ex-prisoners, focusing specifically on parole residency policies and the provision of public housing vouchers.

If you are wanting to relocate to a parole district outside of their original jurisdiction may want to initiate the process prior to release from incarceration. Parole and probation may have requirements and fees that are assessed going through this process, so working with the officers to get that information will be key for successful relocation.
